My School Uniform of the 1980s

Aleksandra Koneva uses clothing to “portray” hidden feelings from her school days. Her exploration of her school uniform (in 1992, Russia abolished it) shows these clothes as an unpleasant memory of the system, which strove to level and regiment everything.
In “School Uniform of Yearning”, the sky flashes through and lures the longing for wonderful moments in life. The “School Uniform of the Winners” and the “School Uniform of the Losers” give visual form to the school’s evaluation system. 1 and 2 are the worst grades and correspond to nails, while 4 and 5 are the best marks and show up in the form of candies.
The narrative connection of individual feelings, images, and memories is characteristic of the authentic subjectivity in Koneva’s life. Her compositions contain collective cultural patterns and complex experiences of peculiarity and manipulability.
