"Sowki" 2009
Series I-XV, Color photography 1-15, Edition of 5, 30 x 40 cm

Sowki – this plural form is an abbreviation for dustpans; in the singular, “Sawok” is a characteristic expression for the Soviet person or the Soviet mentality. These works show faceless people, a cross-section of Russian society, from the apparatchik, party functionary, or bureaucrat to the laborer. Their affiliation is recognizable only in their depicted occupations. The meanings of the word “Sowki” become a balancing act between seriousness and fun.
